Herb Crop Guides

  • Many herbs are grown in Charlie’s Community Garden both for their aromatic foliage for cooking, and their flowers to attract pollinators for our vegetable crops. The majority of our herbs are grown in easily accessible pots on the fence lines.

    BASIL
    Greek basil is grown as a herbaceous perennial to attract pollinators

    Italian basil is grown as an annual culinary herb. Pinch out shoot tips to promote bushy growth and remove flowers to promote leaf production.

    BAY
    An evergreen small tree whose leaves are picked as a culinary herb.

    BORAGE
    A self seeding annual herb which is grown largely as a pollinator.

    CHIVES
    A hardy perennial whose purple flowers attract bees and the leaves are picked as a culinary herb. Cut back after flowering to promote fresh growth and divide established clumps in Spring or Autumn.

    COMFREY
    This leafy perennial herb is grown to pick the leaves to supplement minerals to our compost and worm castings. It is also used as a tea to promote strength of stems of plants.

    CORIANDER
    A flowering annual grown for its leaves and seeds which runs to seed in hot weather so it’s best to sow continuously throughout Winter.

    CURRY
    This tree is grown for its leaves to be picked as a culinary herb. Care must be taken to prune it regularly to prevent the berries from being spread as a weed by birds.

    DILL
    A delicate annual which`is best sown continuously throughout Winter for its leaves to be picked as a culinary herb.

    ECHINACEA
    This perennial herb is grown for its large attractive pink flowers which are attractive to pollinators.

    GARLIC CHIVES
    A hardy perennial whose white flowers attract pollinators and the leaves are picked as culinary herb. Cut back after flowers to promote fresh growth and divide established clumps in Spring or Autumn. Garlic Chives are susceptible to black aphids which can be treated with Eco Oil.

    LAVENDER
    This evergreen hardy shrub is grown for it flowers which attract bees and butterflies. Trim bush after flowering.

    LEMON BALM
    A hardy spreading perennial which thrives in moist soil.

    LEMON VERBENA
    This evergreen hardy shrub is grown for its leaves which make a delicious herbal tea.

    MINT
    A hardy spreading perennial which thrives in moist soil.

    NASTURTIUM
    A climbing, flowering annual which is grown for its flowers which attract pollinators. Flowers, leaves and seeds are all edible.

    OREGANO
    A hardy herbaceous perennial whose leaves are picked as a culinary herb.

    PARSLEY
    A hardy biannual usually grown as an annual. Continental parsley is grown at Charlie’s Community Garden as a culinary herb.

    PERILLA (also known as Shiso)
    This small, branched non-woody plant is grown to enjoy it aromatic leaves.

    ROSEMARY
    This evergreen hardy herb is grown in the prostrate form at Charlie’s Garden. Its flowers are attractive to bees and its leaves are a culinary herb.

    SAGE
    An evergreen shrub whose leaves are picked as a culinary herb. Sage prefers drier soil.

    THYME
    A low growing creeping ground over which is grown for its flowers which attract pollinators and its leaves are picked as a culinary herb.
